I CAN'T TAKE THIS FEEEEELING ANYMOOOOORE

no but seriously, though - Royce respects Matt, is the best way to put this, I think. Royce thought Matt was an idiot for wanting to do things the hard way (aka not killing people) but that doesn't bother him so much. A lot of people think it's not okay to murder other people so Royce takes their opinions with a grain of salt. Either way, Royce always thought Matt had a good head on his shoulders - he was pretty convinced that Matt was innocent the whole time and that the dude was gonna get taken for a ride a bunch.

Which... he kind of did. Royce also doesn't feel bad about pretending to be a Fox, either, or about his choices in the game. Royce was all about trying to get out alive himself, and he's not above sacrificing other people for that opporunity. It's just that he kind of started to care about other people in the game more than he was expecting, and that was about the point that his motivations switched. He was trapped in a lie with Matt, but he didn't really care - he used the stuff he knew to try and make the trials a little less skewed. And he knew Matt would back him up if he told Matt first, so he did, and then went ahead and made a big old target of himself.

BUT THAT'S ALL KIND OF TANGENT-Y for royce, matt reminds him of a weird combination of hadrian and royce?? Like there's a lot of anger that Royce sees lurking under the surface that reflects the way that Royce feels about things, but Matt does things in a much more Hadrian-esque way than Royce ever would. So Royce wasn't sure what to do with that - he wasn't sure if he wanted to try and take advantage of it or ally himself up with it.

Royce isn't used to people caring about his safety, either. Or respecting him in return - he considers Matt calling him Duster a sign of respect and he really appreciated it. So... Matt is weird in that respect but Royce likes him. Thinks he might've liked to work with the guy a little bit more, too - just never really could get to that point because Royce is such a solitary creature that it's hard for him to make that connection.

Honestly I think the biggest human gesture Royce made all game was offering to hold onto the names for Matt's friends for him. He didn't do it for anybody else, weh.
