Gi-ne was really smart, too! Gosh, eat under the table, brilliant plan, absolute lifesaver. Everybody else was just like "Bols just take your stupid mask off no way your face is worse than what Shijima was doing to the bodies like we have all seen some shit here it can't be that bad" and Gi-ne's like "well why not just eat where nobody can see you? PROBLEM SOLVED." He is very sensitive about his face and being respectful of that is a good way to get points in his book.
Which is why he was actually pretty hurt when he actually showed her his face and she was like "are you fucking kidding me" about it. GI-NE THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE HE'S HORRIFYINGLY HIDEOUS WHY DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND??? He might've sulked at her longer but then she went and immediately got accused of Generalhood and nooooooooo. He really tried his best to defend her, and when it turned out in the end that she really was a General, it... it was complicated.
Like, Bols never resented the Generals for what they were doing or anything. Like, oh, hideous murder, that's just Tuesday in the Empire. Must've offended someone higher up somehow and got signed up for some new exciting torture activity. (This is part of why he was so OK with offering himself as sacrifice; he wasn't really entirely convinced anyone would be getting off the island if they did win.) So he wasn't, like, mad at Gi-ne for lying to everybody and killing people and all of that. Just luck of the draw, pretty much, he figured. So he didn't really see anything contradictory about mourning her while also letting her death spur him on into more active participation in trying to find the other Generals.
Not that he was terribly good at it still, but, y'know, An Attempt Was Made.
It was still kind of a relief to find out that the Generals were actually the good guys, though. (Once that. Finally fully sunk in. THERE WERE A LOT OF BOMBSHELLS DROPPED ALL AT ONCE OKAY IT WAS A LOT TO TAKE IN.) Gosh, Gi-ne, you're so nice, second favorite Mama. (Number one favorite is his wife, nobody beats his wife.)
