Matt actually liked Stocking a lot :( He was pretty pissed about her death. Now, it's no secret that Matt was really protective of the younger characters, but while Stocking was a teenager, she didn't ping as a kid to him. Something in between, maybe? If she'd been older they might have had a ~spark, but he definitely thought she was ballsy and smart and pretty decent, since he heard her comforting the kids, he was very helpful to her, and helpful in general. She thought of him a lot and he appreciated that.

He didn't take the angel thing seriously because that would be ridiculous and also BLASPHEMY, but Stocking left a strong impression on him for the first few days she was alive. Honestly, if she had been alive longer he would have definitely allied with her, as it was she was one of the people he liked most from the get-go and the state of her body post-dead disgusted and infuriated him, especially since Stocking had been helpful and kind to.... EVERYONE? and had basically gotten betrayed.

Aside from that, he got a kick out of the brownie recipe, and he thought she was really intelligent and together! She appreciated her sass and strong personality. He liked that she was a leader and not a follower, but since he's Catholic he feels that he should have stepped up to draw attention off of her and prevented her death somehow. SAD VIOLIN. But once he found out the truth of the graveyard, he was pretty relieved that she'd be okay. HE LIKES LISTENING TO HER VOICE.

Okay, so after Hinata and Clarine, Max was the person Matt was most protective and fond of!! They didn't thread all that much, but it's no secret that Matt has a soft spot for the kiddies and he's really passionate about ~defending the innocent. Matt is basically a living lie detector in canon thanks to his bullshit heightened senses so he listens to people's heartbeats to find out if they're lying or not. This was nerfed in Ship Trap bc it's dumb, but he still felt Max was sincere about her plight and feelings (unlike, say, Rei, whose behavior was inconsistent), so he counted her as an innocent, and his heart went out to her. He tried to assure her where he could, even if he didn't fully believe what he was telling her (like, he held himself responsible for all the choices he made in the game, but, like the hypocrite he is, told Max it wasn't her fault)

The reason he had her take a picture of his handwriting was in case he died, he was planning to leave notes about the plot deets he was finding out, and wanted her to have it so she could compare his handwriting. This idea didn't last long, but even if her pictures did nothing for him, once she started to cope with everything, Matt found her very bright and helpful. And Royce had a soft spot for her, which Matt found endearing.

Aside from being buttmad about the fact that Max was dragged into this cruel game to begin with, as I said, Matt counted her as an innocent so he was really angry that anyone would target her. He never promised to try to get her home safely like he did with Hinata and Clarine, but he would've if they'd spoken more, and it was one of his goals. Whomp whomp.

He had some pretty conflicting feelings about her having killed Souza. In a way he kind of blamed Royce because he armed her and Max obviously listened to him and trusted his judgment so Royce shouldn't have encouraged her to gun people in the night, but on the other hand, he also wasn't really happy with Max for that. He can't fully blame her with the circumstances and knows she was really scared, but murder is badong and teenage girls shouldn't do it!! LEAVE IT TO THE ASSHOLES.

In any case, if he had known Max was trying to make deals with the Judge she would have gotten an earful from Mama Murdock, but other than that, he is still pretty fond of her.

On an ooc note i'm glad she found him really comforting because that means i was ic bc he has a very comforting presence even though he's blind HA

Matt should have known she was evil when she tried to steal his food. DON'T THINK HE DIDN'T NOTICE, YOU SHIT.

Anyway Matt didn't have a huge impression of Gi-ne from the start! She was on his radar for being nice and helpful and he also appreciated the way she looked out for the kids and whatnot. He could tell she was smart, even if she acted kind of doofy and kept her head down. In fact, that was probably smarter, considering like, Stocking got killed after taking a leadership role. He didn't find her suspicious at first because she was pretty good at keeping a low profile, but had she lived longer he would have suspected her because she keeps such a low profile. Personally I suspected Clarine and Hinata for a while but Matt is too biased towards kids to properly consider them, but UNFORTUNATELY GI-NE DOESN'T HAVE THAT LUXURY.

In any case, he felt shitty for having to vote for her, especially since Matt is one of those jerks who doesn't like the swords (+Gumis, he lumped them all together) as a group, even if he liked a few of them. and he found them hella suspicious. But if it hadn't been her, it would have been Tsurumaru (since it didn't make sense for Kasen to be guilty) and Gi-ne had evidence against her, so welp. The way she pleaded with Royce and everyone tugged a bit at his heartstrings, but that just made him all the more pissed when she turned out to be a General who was just playing them. That's part of why he got so pissed and punched her! Once you get to the Fisk arc of Daredevil you'll see that Matt has Very Strong Feelings about people living horrible double lives, especially when they're outwardly kind while doing horrible shit in the background. And since Matt didn't know Shijima was mutilating the bodies, all the disgust and anger funneled directly to Gi-ne. He would have absolutely tried to beat her within an inch of her life (or even kill her since he was quickly reaching that point even with his Huge Moral Issues about murder) if Hinata hadn't stepped in and brought him back to reality.

But the grudge and anger basically stayed with him. Since Gi-ne was the only one they knew for sure was a General, (aside from Orion but that's another story) she was the only physical target for all his rage and frustration. Of which he had a lot of. As you know. He was also fond of Royce, so Gi-ne playing him was shitty. While Matt tried to stay objective (as he knew deep down, Gi-ne was likely being coerced just as much as everyone else and her comment about her children made him wonder if she was being blackmailed), he was pretty pissed, so it was hard.

IN ANY CASE.... one he started finding out the plot deets about the Generals and the kids went to face him, it was a different kind of anger! He really thought the kids were being used and manipulated, and while he blamed the Judge for that, their idea that they had to do this for his sake and that they owed him this murder and the way they kept crying and falling apart really shook him to the core. And again, it filled him with total rage, and while a lot of his anger was irrational and spilled over to Gi-ne, he also kind of blamed her for the way they were getting manipulated, since at the very least, she should have protected them and not let them murder at all!! The Generals' insistence that Hinata and Clarine were really brave for doing that and ~~wanted to do it for him~~ just made him livid, because he felt that attitude was wrong and the rest of the Generals, including Gi-ne, were encouraging it when they should have been doing the opposite!!

Regardless, Matt was seriously concerned those kids were getting used and while he's still a little pissed at the Generals for perpetuating that, their idea of winning to save everyone was real, and he also recognized (after they tumbled for a bit) that Gi-ne did the best she could and most of the things he was pissed about were out of her hands. So, once he calmed down, he's more or less fine with her. I MEAN, he won't apologize, because she pulled a lot of dick moves and she killed people like Stocking and Ema, but he recognizes he was being irrational and his fight isn't really with her. He's more fine with her than he is with most of the mafia, in any case. Everything turned out fine, though, and now, with all the info, he really can tell that she did genuinely care and her goal was to help people, so he can respect that!

He was also pretty impressed with her fighting skills because Matt makes great decisions when it comes to ladies. I mean, I was only partially joking about the making out thing, because he'd be totally down with it. She is his type (strong, dangerous women), and without his pesky feels getting in the way, he can properly respect and admire her now. And he'd definitely find her attractive.
